The African Initiative on Bioinformatics Online Training in Neurodegenerative Diseases (AI-BOND) project

Training the Next Generation of African Scientists in State-of-theart Bioinformatic and Epidemiologic Methods in Neurodegenerative Diseases

AFRICAN INITIATIVE FOR BIOINFORMATICS ONLINE TRAINING IN NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES (AI-BOND)

The African Initiative on Bioinformatics Online Training in Neurodegenerative Diseases (AI-BOND) project is a Free and comprehensive program aimed at advancing bioinformatics expertise in Africa for the study of neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s diseases, entail significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, and Africa is no exception.

The AI-BOND program seeks to address this issue by providing accessible and high-quality online training in bioinformatics, with a specific focus on the analysis of genomic and proteomic data related to neurodegenerative diseases. The project brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts, including bioinformaticians, neuroscientists, educators and mentors to develop and deliver a curated curriculum combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The online training program covers a wide range of topics, including R programing, Python, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, Metabolomics, analysis, and statistical methods, all tailored to the study of neurodegenerative diseases. The curriculum is designed to accommodate participants at various levels of expertise, from beginners/bachelors’ level to advanced learners/graduate students currently studying in or have graduated from faculties in African countries, especially from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The training includes interactive modules, lectures, and collaborative projects.

Upon completion of the training, the participants will receive a training certificate from the Brain Research Africa Initiative (BRAIN) organization, which has developed the project with its partners.

Bioinformatics Training for African Scientists

Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (AD/ADRD), present a significant challenge globally, affecting millions of individuals and their families. While it has been recognized as a leading cause of death in many countries, the burden of AD/ADRD is particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries due to their aging populations and limited healthcare resources. Africa, with its rapidly growing elderly population and diverse healthcare landscape, faces unique challenges in addressing the impact of AD/ADRD, which is increasingly recognized as a public health priority

Building computational research capacities is a crucial aspect of addressing the challenges of dementia in Africa. Computational research, including bioinformatics, data science, and artificial intelligence, play a significant role in understanding the underlying mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders, identifying potential biomarkers, developing predictive models, and exploring novel therapeutic interventions. In the context of AD/ADRD, computational researchers can help analyze large datasets, including genomic, proteomic, and neuroimaging data, to uncover patterns, associations, and potential targets for intervention. By leveraging computational techniques such as machine learning and network analysis, researchers can gain insights into the complex interactions underlying dementia pathophysiology, thus facilitating the discovery of new diagnostic tools and therapeutic approaches for heterogeneous populations such as those of Africa.
